Craze-generated fibrils
Webcrazes can sustain stress due to the formation of fibrils of oriented chains that span from one face of the microvoid to the other (see figure below). These fibrils can make up 20 to 50% of the craze volume and can support noticeable tensile stresses. The fibrils are often only a few nanometers in diameter and therefore WebJan 27, 2024 · Pre-formed fibrils (PFFs) are a recently developed novel tool. They can model PD and AD, and are increasingly being employed in related studies in neurodegenerative disease research. PFFs are...

WebFeb 1, 2024 · The structural features of the craze fibrils in the CG and UA simulations are almost the same, and both correlate with the underlying entanglement network as in the traditional theoretical description, reflecting the preservation of structural correlations during the coarse-graining. WebAug 23, 2005 · Crazes are planar crack-like defects, where the two faces of the craze are bridged by thin fibrils. Upon application of stress, crazes widen, leading to stretching of …
Crazing occurs in polymers, because the material is held together by a combination of weaker Van der Waals forces and stronger covalent bonds. Sufficient local stress overcomes the Van der Waals force, allowing a narrow gap. Once the slack is taken out of the backbone chain, covalent bonds holding the chain together hinder further widening of the gap. The gaps in a craze are microscopic in size. Crazes can be seen because light reflects off the surfaces of the gaps.
